Atlanta Hawks Surprise Us All

May 5th, 2008

Are the Hawks back?  After living in Atlanta for almost 12 years we have had very little to cheer about from our sports teams in recent years.  Even the Braves had a dismal season last year.  Now here come our Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs making it a seven game series with the Boston Celtics who boasted an all star roster after some preseason trades.

When everyone found out we had to play the Celtics in the first round nobody gave the Hawks a chance but as the series played out we were all eating our words.  The Hawks managed to win all three home games and forced a seventh game which was played today.  While the Hawks were beaten today and eliminated from contention the fans have renewed faith in our Hawks.  I guess it would be stretch to say the nearly eliminated the best team in the NBA from the playoffs, but the certainly didn’t lie down and assume they were beaten. Well, at least in Atlanta home games.  The Boston Garden games were another story where the Hawks were beaten badly at each time.  It’s odd how they can beat a team two days ago and loose to them by 30+ points today.

We’ll take what we can at this point in Atlanta.  Their first visit to the playoffs in nine years, and they nearly knock out the Celtics! That’s a great story. At least none of them have been federally indicted!  It is pretty sad when all you hope for your teams is that they all stay out of jail long enough to stay out of prison.

Thank You, Hawks!  See you next year!

I’m back…..

May 4th, 2008

Well I have been very slammed traveling for work and have not posted in quite sometime.  I’ll try to get better.  After all this is where I need to write.

Just read a great article on writing ideas at www.writetodone.com about writing ideas and I am inspired once again.

I am a writer! I am a writer! ………….

Smaller Gut, Larger Wallet

April 15th, 2008

I have realized two things about myself this past weekend.  One I’m in debt and two I’m over weight.  Well maybe I knew this before last weekend but tax time always makes me wonder what the heck happen to all that money I made last year?

After sifting through all of my finances for 2007 I started looking at my budget.  And, it was a pretty grim outlook.  Not that I’m going to “the poor house” as my mother used to say having lived through the depression, but my quest to be a true American and live well beyond my means was very evident.  You think I would know better since about 15 years ago I was on the verge of claiming bankruptcy after a bad career move out of state.

What was clearly evident in all of this was one factor.  I spend way too much money on food.  Yes I know people are looting in some countries right now due to lack of food and I should care, and I do care, but its so easy to just pick up dinner on the way home or sleep in a few extra minutes because I don’t really need to get up and make my lunch, I’ll just eat out.  It’s convenience.  It’s easy.

This brings me to the part that gets to me.  I’m broke.  I’m fat.  I’m aging by the minute, wait that’s a topic for another post, and it seems I have no control over either one of those.  But I do, and that is the hardest part to swallow.

So what can I do about it?  One simple step that may prove more difficult than I realize right now, but for one month I’m going to not eat out for lunch!  I know this seems like such a minor step to some but for me it’s a step towards my goal of being less in debt and in better shape.  Think about it though, this simple step will most likely save me $150 dollars this month and if I’m not spending half my lunch hour scarfing down some calorie laden burger I’ll have more time to write, or go for a short walk.  This really could be a small catalyst for getting me back on track both financially and physically.

So as I post this I’m on day two and have kept to it.  I’ll keep you posted!

The Zoo Wagon, Part 1

April 1st, 2008

It was the most liberating experience I have ever had.  Freedom at last!  On my 16th birthday my mom took me to get my driver’s operator’s license, which mint I was official.  I was aloud to sit behind the wheel and go where ever I could afford the gas money.

It was mid May on a hot day in Florida and I drove nervously to high school after getting that official laminated paper in my pocket, in my 1968 Chevy Biscayne wagon with an I6 a.  It was a car I already had for a few months which was actually my grandmother’s old car.  I know what your thinking, grandma’s car, but you have to understand this was my ticket to the beach, to the mall, to wherever I wanted to go, when ever I wanted to go.  Besides, this was 1981, and it was actually a pretty cool ride for a punk in Florida in the height of the new wave generation. It was that faded gold color, you know what I mean someone in your family or neighborhood had one just like it back in the 70’s.  The interior was an impeccable tan vinyl which was just great for producing just the right amount of sweat to soak the back of your shirt before you made it to school.  But it was transportation!  But it still needed something?

Yes! Some form of identity so it was soon adorned with a “Zoo Crew” front plate which I hand painted in traditional punk style of red and black paint on an old white plate that had some dealer name on the back side that you could not see.  It had uneven obviously hand painted lines going in all directions, with “Zoo Crew” as bold as I could get it.

The Zoo Crew was a motley crew of friends that some how came up with this self proclaimed moniker.  But we were young and we were the crew!

How to get a tradeshow booth built?

April 1st, 2008

If you are asking yourself this question you probably have decided to attend your first show or have been handed this task by your manager and have no clue where to start. Well, before you should be asking “how”, you should be asking yourself, “why”. Why am I attending the show, what is my main objective for exhibiting, and how do I intend to accomplish this with the message that my exhibit will convey?

You will convey these goals in the architecture of the booth, and the messaging or signage you choose to include. The architecture is what sets the mood of your space. If you are in the finance business you want to convey a professional, stable, and wealthy environment. If you are a surfboard manufacturer then you want something fun and attractive to your target market. Not to say you have to stick to those rules, after all your first priority is to attract attention to your booth. You need to give the attendee a reason to approach you, but at the same time generate quality leads.

So you want to include the three “W”’s of a tradeshow booth, who, what, and where. Who, refers to your company Identity. You want attendees to remember who you are and why you are better than your competitor. What, is simply what you do. State it clearly and concisely in short easily read text. Remember you only have few seconds to catch the attention of that purchasing agent walking down the aisle. They may not recognize your company name but if you sell rubber gloves then put that message out there for all to see. Attendees will spot products first sometimes not necessarily companies. And the where is how do they contact you. Is it a website? Is it a phone number? Is your product relevant only to a specific geographical region? It’s important for perspective clients to have a sense of stability, and that you have a base of operation that can fulfill their requirements. Along with the who make sure you have plenty of business cards out for the taking so they know how to reach you a month after the show and make sure you get their information so you can follow up after the show.

So now that you have answered these basic questions let’s get back to actually building a booth. If you were at this stage I would recommend you don’t actually build at all. There is a portion of the tradeshow industry known as “portables”, these booths are pre-manufactured almost off the shelf properties that offer the first exhibitor a chance to get involved for small investments while keeping your show site costs down. Because believe it or not the exhibit cost is usually only about 50% of the cost to put your booth in the show. But that’s another subject for another time.

Ultimately you want to get some quality advice from someone who knows the industry. There are many hidden costs that can translate into major investments of time and money that can sneak up and cripple the entire event for you and your company.

Like one of the articles suggest, use the your local phone directory and look for Displays or Display Designers and Producers. Call around and ask if that have portables available. It will also benefit you to work with someone local that you can meet in person and discuss you goals for the show and help you keep costs to a minimum.

The web is a wonderful tool as well. Do a search for Portable Exhibits. This will bring up several companies that specialize in portables and they can direct you to their local supplier.

Ultimately. You want someone to guide you through the process, and there are plenty of reputable companies out there that can do just that.
